Why NDT (Thyroid) from Thailand is so expensive now? Major 2022 Update

Many customers, new and old called me greedy because the current price of Thai Natural Desiccated Thyroid  (Thiroyd and TR Thyroid)  is 1399 Euro for 1 bottle (1000 tablets).

These outrageous prices are due to multiple factors.

Pandemic and the price of

The pandemic. But it’s not the  COVID-19 pandemic. It’s the ASF – African Swine Fever.  This pig disease caused disruption in the supply chain of NDT products for Thai companies, that used to source their Thyroid extract from Asia. Suppliers for Thai producers of Thiroyd, Thyroid-S and T.Man Thyroid (TR Thyroid) were affected.

What Donald Trump has to do with the NDT thyroid from Thailand?

Have you ever heard about MAGA – Make America Great Again by Donald Trump? One of the core foundations of that policy was the return of manufacturing jobs back to the USA, so American blue-collar workers can get better-paying jobs. 80% of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) consumed in the USA are made in China. Including Thyroid Powder (USP) used in the US compounding pharmacies and the majority of “American” brands of Desiccated Thyroid Extract.

FDA destroys global Thyroid Powder supply chain used in American and Thai NDT

In 2018 FDA announced that the major supplier of Thyroid powder is allegedly not following GMP standards. Please understand, it doesn’t mean the product itself was bad, it basically just means that there were some paperwork errors, allegedly. So, the American generic brands of NDT can now brake the contract with the Chinese suppliers (without any penalty) and the thyroid powder production will resume inside the USA creating American jobs! Glory to Donald Trump. Unfortunately, that’s not what happened, because in 2020 election Donald Trump lost, and American NDT brands and compounding pharmacies started to buy Thyroid Powder (USP) from China again. Just from a different company that does not manufacture a great product like the guys before did. The funniest thing is that the second company (Sichuan Deebio Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd) is also from the same area: Sichuan, as the company accused by FDA. I am sure it’s just a total coincidence 🙂

Hypothyroid patients globally, including in the USA wanted to express our gratitude to FDA for all the suffering that was caused by NDT supply chain disruption in  2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and until this day. Because of the lack of reliable Thyroid Powder, millions of people were turned into hypothyroid, cold-blooded zombies, but at least the paperwork was right! You gotta have priorities! 

Why Thiroyd by Greater Pharma and TR Thyroid by T.Man from Thailand is no longer manufactured?

NDT products are very niche products. The demand is low (compare to synthetic T4 only medicine), so Thai pharmaceutical companies do not have high motivation to find new suppliers for thyroid powder… Because of that production of all Thai NDT products has stopped in 2019.

Like it or not, the source of thyroid powder in Thai OTC thyroid meds was China.

Sriprasit Pharma – the producer of Thyroid-S has resumed production, so the price has somehow decreased, however the size of the bottles has also decreased. Thyroid-S 1000 tablets bottle is the past. Now Thyroid-S 500 tablets bottle is the reality.

Is Thyroid s from Thailand still being manufactured?

Sriprasit Pharma, the manufacturer of Thyroid-S, has resumed production and it’s still on the company’s website (as of 2022). That’s not what you can say about Thiroyd (by Greater Pharma) or TR Thyroid (by T.Man).
