NP Thyroid Uses, Side Effects & Warnings

NP Thyroid is a prescription medicine used to treat an underactive thyroid. It replaces the hormone that your thyroid gland is not making. NP Thyroid is used to treat hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). This condition can occur after surgery to remove the thyroid gland, thyroid nodules, radiation treatment, thyroid cancer, autoimmune Hashimoto thyroiditis, or low thyroid gland function.

The active ingredient in NP Thyroid is Thyroid Powder (USP) known also as desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) or natural desiccated thyroid (NDT). The source of Thyroid Powder used in this drug is a pig’s thyroid gland.

Who manufactures NP Thyroid?

Acella Pharmaceuticals LLC manufactures NP Thyroid. Acella is not a company with a long history; it was founded only in 2007.

Nature-Throid is a natural desiccated thyroid medication that is FDA-regulated and contains hormone components identical to the hormones produced by the human thyroid gland. As such, Nature-Throid can help restore hormone levels and alleviate symptoms of hypothyroidism. In addition, Nature-Throid is generally well tolerated and has a low risk of side effects. For these reasons, Nature-Throid used to be a popular treatment option for those with hypothyroidism.

The medication is available as tablets (pills), and it should be taken as directed by a physician or experienced and trusted healthcare professional. The active ingredient in Nature Throid is Thyroid USP powder; the other name is desiccated porcine thyroid.

NP Thyroid inactive ingredients (complete list):

  • Calcium stearate
  • Dextrose (agglomerated)
  • Mineral oil

What is Natural desiccated thyroid (NDT)?

Natural desiccated thyroid (NDT) is a medication made from the dried thyroid gland of an animal, usually a pig. It contains all hormones naturally produced by the thyroid gland, including thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).

NDT is used to treat hypothyroidism, where the body does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It is also sometimes used off-label to treat other conditions, such as obesity and Hashimoto’s disease.

NDT is available in both prescription and over-the-counter formulations and is generally considered safe and effective when used as directed. However, like all medications, it carries the risk of side effects and should be used with caution in people with certain medical conditions.

  • soy products, e.g., infant soy formula or soy milk

Your medical condition, laboratory test results, and your response to treatment will all influence the dosage. Children’s dosage is also based upon their age/weight.

You will benefit from this medication if you take it regularly. You can remember to take medicine at the same time each day.

You should not stop taking this medication until you have spoken with your doctor or another professional healthcare provider. Thyroid replacement therapy is generally taken for life.

Medications influencing the absorption of NP Thyroid and other drug interactions

Certain medications can reduce the amount of thyroid hormone that your body absorbs. These drugs should be separated from your NP Thyroid tablets.

  • Cholestyramine (colestipol)
  • colestipol (colesevelam)
  • antacids
  • sucralfate
  • contraceptive pills
  • estrogen pills

There are several brands of thyroid hormone available. Change brands only after consulting your doctor, pharmacist, or trusted healthcare professional.

Low hormone levels can lead to tiredness, muscle pains, constipation, and dry, cracked skin: weight gains, slow heartbeats, and sensitivity to cold. Talk to your doctor if you feel your condition worsens or persists for more than a few weeks.

Risks and considerations

Like every drug, there’s a chance that thyroid prescription medications will lead to adverse effects. Whether synthetic or natural, improper use of thyroid hormones shouldn’t be used to treat obesity or help with weight loss. Taking a thyroid replacement medication won’t help someone with normal thyroid function lose weight.

Using Nature-Throid to reduce weight in people with normal thyroid levels is dangerous, not safe, and can be life-threatening. Strokes, seizures, shock, coma, and death have been reported in people who have taken higher than recommended dosages of thyroid hormone preparations for weight loss.

Drawbacks of NP Thyroid

The most significant disadvantage is that they are not as potent as they used to be and have a strong, unpleasant smell.

Using NP Thyroid for the most significant benefits:

Take your tablets on an empty stomach, 30 minutes-1h before eating or drinking coffee, tea or grapefruit, or pomelo juice. After that time, eat breakfast containing carbohydrates, like high quality, sweet, ripe fruit, and at least 20 grams of animal protein (e.g., 3 oz of beef).

Who is NP Thyroid For?

The majority of people who take levothyroxine still have hypothyroid symptoms. Researchers are still working to find what’s wrong, but it may result from an abnormality in how pituitary glands, thyroid glands, and hypothalamus communicate. Probably it’s because levothyroxine contains only T4. All people not satisfied with levothyroxine (e.g., Synthroid) treatment should consider desiccated thyroid extract.

Warnings for NP Thyroid

Nature-Throid is not recommended for people with a thyroid disorder, thyrotoxicosis (a condition when you have too much thyroid hormone), or an adrenal gland problem that isn’t under control.
Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions as with any prescription medication. Let your doctor know immediately if you experience any side effects or an unusual medical event.

Tell your doctor if: You have any food or medicine allergies. You’re pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding. Remember, keep this and all other medicines out of the reach of children. Patients on thyroid hormone preparations and parents of children on thyroid therapy should be informed that: Replacement therapy is to be taken essentially for life.

Before taking this medicine

Since the thyroid is naturally present in our body, nearly everybody “takes” desiccated thyroid. However, thyrotoxicosis can be fatal for those with thyroid conditions causing adrenal problems. Tell a doctor about the heart disease – angina – vascular disease – heart failure – congestive heart failure. Desiccated thyroid may not cause birth defects. However, the doses may need to be adjusted for the pregnant woman. Tell your physician if you’re pregnant while taking this drug.

NP Thyroid final review

Until 2017, NP Thyroid was a quality product; unfortunately, since 2019, the quality has gone downhill. The availability of NP Thyroid is good. Unfortunately, the tablets are not working as well as they used to. But there is more…

On top of that, most patients using NP Thyroid complain about the smell of the tablets. It’s horrible! There is no consensus among users, does it smell like a cat’s urine, cat feces, cat’s litter box, stinky sweaty socks left in a plastic bag for a week, or as Acella marketing people say it: “distinctively stronger smell.” Whatever you want to call it, one thing is for sure. That stinky odor smells up high heaven and it doesn’t leave you all day! Some people are double-checking to see if they bought NDT or a costly, slightly used but dried cat litter in pill form.

To sum it up. If you want an NDT that has terrible reviews, is stinky, and is much less effective than it used to be, you can’t go wrong with NP Thyroid!

1/10. I do not recommend it!
